Jefferson is back at it with another cam bearing video. All of us that know him well are giving him a hard time about being the cam bearing guy, but nobody takes them more seriously so pay attention and learn how to put them in your engine. If you missed his video on putting cam bearings in an LS engine, don’t worry we’ve got a link to that one below as well. Check out the info below and then watch to learn everything you wanted to know about installing your own cam bearings.
Far too often, DIY builders leave worn out cam bearings in the block during a rebuild because replacing cam bearings is scary. The reality is that it is not that difficult. Our 2015 L83 5.3 liter had a lifter get sideways, which on a roller lifter is really bad. That sent schrapnel through the entire engine, which wiped out a couple of the cam bearings.
Jefferson goes through the entire process of removing the old bearings and installing the new bearings. Along the way, he talks you through some of the intricate details on how the cam operates in Gen V LT engines, including the funky rear bearing and how to replace it with a 3rd-design LS cam bearing set.
Jefferson is using a Powerhouse Tools cam bearing installer tool. He shows you the tricks to installing cam bearings on these Gen V engines. The main issue is that unlike most other engines, you can’t install the end bearings from the opposite end, which is the correct way to do the job. Typically, you install the first 3 bearings from the back of the block, and then switch around and install the last two bearings from the front, so that the tool can be centered using the front bearng journal. That is impossible on these blocks because the webbing under the cam journals is too small to fit a bearing in and get the tool head inside the block. Jefferson has the tricks for you to help make this easier.
We used brand new GM bearings, show you the measurements and how to position each bearing so you do it for your project.
