igus Introduces Affordable and Environmentally Friendly Slewing Ring Bearing
31 Aug,2023
A leading manufacturer of motion plastics “igus” has introduced a cost-effective and environmentally friendly addition to its iglidur PRT series of slewing ring bearings. The newly launched PRT-05-15-PC offers a minimalist design that not only reduces costs but also contributes to sustainability by utilizing regranulated high-performance plastics.
Slewing ring bearings are pivotal for rotary movements around a fixed axis in various applications, from packaging machines to assembly lines. However, for low-load bearing points often found in furniture construction and display technology, the traditional options, such as metal ball bearings, can be oversized and costly. These traditional bearings also demand significant space, assembly efforts, and ongoing lubrication for proper functioning.
To address these challenges, igus has unveiled the PRT-05-15-PC, a ready-to-install and budget-friendly slewing ring bearing. “Our goal was to produce a light, compact, ready-to-install bearing with as few components as possible,” explains Marc Trenkler, iglidur PRT Product Manager at igus. The design follows minimalist principles and consists of only an inner ring and an outer ring that slide over each other without ball elements. Crafted through a cost-effective injection-molding process, the bearing is entirely made from lightweight high-performance plastic, eliminating the need for any metal components.
The PRT-05-15-PC stands out not only for its compactness and reduced weight but also for its swift assembly. Workers can simply fit the inner and outer rings together with a clip bearing, streamlining the installation process and contributing to cost savings.
Moreover, this new offering is highly eco-friendly. With a remarkable 97% content of regranulated iglidur M260 and iglidur P4 high-performance plastics, the bearing aids in conserving valuable plastics that would otherwise be incinerated. This aligns with the principles of a circular economy and sustainability, while also promoting a reduction in plastic waste. The plastic used in the bearing is integrated with microscopic solid lubricants, ensuring low-friction dry operation without the need for additional lubricating grease. This not only reduces the need for environmentally harmful lubricants but also extends the bearing’s lifespan and minimizes maintenance requirements.
Incorporating these innovative aspects, the PRT-05-15-PC supports the European Union’s sustainability strategy, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 while fostering economic growth. By combining affordability, compactness, and an eco-friendly approach, igus has once again demonstrated its commitment to pushing the boundaries of engineering possibilities and contributing positively to a more sustainable future.
